Have you ever read a book where, so many times, you feel like stopping to cheer on the protagonist but you simultaneously cannot put it down because you are so gripped by the story, so full of suspense that you want to find out, now, how it all pans out.
I don’t usually read fantasy, so I started this book with trepidation, but I fell in love with its obstinate protagonist Zélie, within the first few pages. I knew she would mess up in a big way and could not wait to find out how.
In Adeyemi’s characters we are reminded about our own humanity, about the conflict that sometimes arises between duty and love, about believing in oneself and about the courage that is needed to overcome the many things that stand between us and success.
This is a beautifully told story of epic proportions. It paints a fantastical world which I was able to visualise clearly, thanks to Adeyemi’s vivid descriptions. I cannot wait to see the movie version of this. It screams blockbuster all the way.
